About
Why did you choose a career in Family Medicine?
I chose family medicine primarily because of the broad-spectrum care coverage the practice entails. I experienced firsthand how a lack of representation and advocacy can impact the community without adequate health care services. Those experiences growing up in Nigeria and seeing the challenges present across all ages and spectrums shaped my decision to choose family medicine. Lastly, my mentors helped solidify my decision as I saw what life would be like as a family physician through the lens through which they shaped their daily practice.
What are some of your fondest memories of medical school?
I completed my basic sciences in St. Lucia before my US rotations in Baltimore, Maryland. My most rewarding experiences were on the island when we conducted free Saturday clinics that provided medical care to the community. The experience helped me participate in direct community engagement and identify several areas of need, to include identifying several undiagnosed medical conditions that prompted an earlier medical intervention. I also had the opportunity to serve as SGA president for two terms, helping channel the voice of concerns of the students to the administration in helping facilitate change. Those were all moments I truly enjoyed, and I wouldn’t trade them for anything.
What drew you to pursue family medicine at NGMC?
Several things stood out when considering NGMC, including the faculty and staff’s friendly culture, welcoming atmosphere, and sincerity during the interview process. I also researched the residency program and discovered the hospital system had some well-established medical leaders known across Georgia on their team. It is a privilege to be mentored and trained by these individuals in their specialties. Being a relatively new program, I wanted to help shape the program’s outlook in the upcoming years. Additionally, the health system and the standard of care I witnessed firsthand when a sick family member was treated in Gainesville several years prior helped solidify my decision to make this my first choice.
What drew you to pursue family medicine in Georgia?
I lived in Georgia for several years before starting medical school and had built a large community of family and friends within the state. This, coupled with the fact that there happens to be a large medically underserved population in Georgia, drew my attention back home. Georgia has been good to me and has given me many opportunities to thrive before medical school and in my former role as a military service member. I could not think of any other way to offer back through service to Georgia and give myself to its citizens and the community.
What were your favorite club activities in high school?
I played several active roles in high school that piqued my interest, including being part of the choir, running track and playing soccer.
What are your hobbies?
When not treating patients, I enjoy traveling to different parts of the world, sampling different cuisines, and engaging in many water activities.
Do you have a special interest in the field of family medicine?
I have an interest in global health and travel medicine.
