Charles Richart, MD, FACS, FCCM, Northeast Georgia Medical Center’s (NGMC) medical director of Trauma, Surgical Critical Care and Acute Care Surgery – was named NGMC’s General Surgery Graduate Medical Education Program director in 2017. Dr. Richart has been instrumental in helping NGMC obtain Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accreditation for the general surgery residency program which will welcome their inaugural class in July 2019.
Dr. Richart and his team are building a learning environment that will foster residents becoming a pivotal member of a multidisciplinary, high-functioning team. In this environment, residents will enjoy learning and will acquire the autonomy needed to become a practice-ready general surgeon by the end of their fifth year. Innovative integration of quality and safety and the Quest management system will be part of this journey, as well. As part of the training program, residents will participate in a robust simulation curriculum that includes robotics, and skills development courses such as ATLS, FCCS, FLS and FES.
Dr. Richart has vast experience in Graduate Medical Education. Prior to joining the NGMC staff, he served as the founding general surgery residency program director at the University of Texas – Rio Grande Valley. He has more than 20 years’ experience teaching surgical education in the fields of trauma, surgical critical care and general surgery – and has held faculty positions at the University of Tennessee, the University of Missouri- Kansas City and the University of Kansas. Dr. Richart has served as an Associate Board Examiner for the American Board of Surgery Oral Certifying Exam. He has held multiple leadership positions including serving on the Board for the Society for the Advancement of Blood Management (SABM).
Dr. Richart is a national course consultant and faculty for the Fundamental Critical Care Support (FCCS) course and has established multiple courses across the nation.
Dr. Richart received his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta and his bachelor’s degree from The Citadel in Charleston, S.C. Dr. Richart completed his general surgery residency at Loma Linda University in Loma Linda, Calif. – and completed his fellowship in trauma critical care at R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, Maryland Institute of Emergency Medical Services Systems at the University of Maryland in Baltimore, Md.
Dr. Richart is glad to be back home in Georgia, having grown up in Augusta. He enjoys spending time with his family and they take advantage of the activities in the region – these range from competitive shooting, hunting, fishing in Lake Lanier and a short day trip to shark fishing and deep sea game fishing, off the Georgia coast.

About Northeast Georgia Medical Center’s GME program
Northeast Georgia Medical Center’s (NGMC) Graduate Medical Education program will begin receiving applications for the Internal Medicine and General Surgery Residency Programs in August 2018 and will match the inaugural class in the spring of 2019. NGMC’s Graduate Medical Education program is designed to train residents to be leaders in the medical field as well as in the community.
